The 2005 season began
this past weekend at the California Speedway in Fontana, CA, with a win
for the #12 Volkswagen Golf GTI VR6, sponsored by the Volkswagen Bay
Area Dealer Ad Association. At the 2.8-mile track, touring cars exceed
135 mph on the banking of the super-speedway. “This track is one of most
exhilarating, high-speed racing circuits on the west coast,” said Brett
Erickson of Erickson Motorsports.
During Saturday’s Hankook USTCC first practice session, the #12
Volkswagen Golf GTI had the second best lap time. “Today in practice was
the first time I drove the car with the new Hankook tires, now the spec
tire for the USTCC,” Erickson said. “I was very impressed with how the
tires performed on the high-speed banking and the transition to the
infield road course.”
Erickson’s performance in the Hankook USTCC’s provisional qualifying
session put the #12 Volkswagen Golf GTI on the pole for the 40-minute
sprint race, which Erickson ultimately won. “We clinched our first ever
pole and win for the Erickson Motorsports team in an exciting and
memorable victory. I’m very proud of this accomplishment!” said the
enthusiastic Erickson.
Erickson stood on the podium with a big smile after his first win as a
professional racecar driver. “I couldn’t be more thrilled right now! We
have all worked so hard and it is rewarding to see that we are making
progress with our racing program.” Erickson continued with gratitude, “I
would like to thank the many sponsors that made this win possible,
namely Volkswagen Bay Area Dealer Ad Association, Bildon Motorsport,
Sias Tuning, Sturken Auto Body, RiehlTek Engineering, Eurospec Sport, KW
Suspensions, Maier Racing, K&N Filters, Techtonics Tuning, and VF
Engineering. And a very special thanks to Dave Anderson and the ABD
Racing staff for their amazing effort this weekend.”
In Sunday’s 40-minute main race, which started with a Formula 1 style
standing start, 17 touring cars took the green flag. As the flag waved,
Erickson quickly gained two spots, moving into 6th position. The #12
Volkswagen Golf GTI battled lap after lap during the exciting close
race. Erickson ultimately finished in 8th place at the checkered flag.
“It was a challenging race and I gave it everything I had,” Erickson
said. “I’m delighted with the results for this weekend. A top ten finish
and a win! The car felt good and was right on pace all weekend.
California Speedway will now hold a special place in my memory, my first
professional win. NASA and the Hankook USTCC put on a great event here
and I am looking forward to the racing season ahead.”
